Strategically placed smoke detectors diminish the chances of perishing in a fatal fire by 50%. The instructions set out by manufacturer for installation is to be strictly adhered to for specific models.
Smoke detectors should never be placed in a kitchen to keep it from triggering off upon sensing the smoke from cooking regularly. They are to be placed either on the interior or exterior of bedroom doors, preferably on the inside if the family keeps the door shut at night. They are to be installed in garage, each level of house and guest rooms. Any additional location housing inflammable materials that run the chance of catching fire should have a smoke detector.
They are to be mounted high maintaining a distance of four to twelve inches from the ceiling with no wall corners in near proximity. Smoke being lighter than air rises up and hence the detectors are to be placed high for proper and timely alert. The peak should house the detector for angular roofs. They are never to be mounted in the vicinity of doors and windows as the drafty nature of these places can blow away the smoke.
