Exterior insulation and finish system is a thin coating or lightweight cladding on the exterior. It forms an insulating layer on the walls prior to applying the finish coat of painting. It is usually 1/16th of an inch thick and the material is made mostly from Polymer systems. The EIFS systems could include polystyrene foam on plywood, glass fiber mesh that is reinforced on insulation panels made of polystyrene etc.

The EIFS system could be of two types. One of them is the barrier wall system where all the components should be properly sheathed to prevent the entry of moisture inside the walls. The other type is the wall drainage system used behind weather barriers. This is similar to the cavity walls and the weather barrier should prevent water from migrating inside the interior pores or cracks of the wall. The EIFS systems also help in reduce thermal effects on the walls and at the same time are very inexpensive, light weight and can be shaped in various ways easily.
